Occult hepatitis B infection in chronic hemodialysis patients: Comparison of results and concepts

چکیده
We greatly enjoyed reading the excellent review by Hollinger and colleagues on occult hepatitis B infection in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients (1). As Hollinger et al. mentioned in their review, few studies have shown the prevalence of occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in HD patients. Due to the parenteral transmission of HBV, HD patients are at high risk of acquiring this virus because they need frequent blood transfusions and undergo medical procedures that accompany bleeding (2). The prevalence of occult HBV infection in these patients is between 0 to 58% (3-5). The different frequencies of occult HBV infection in HD patients may be due to variation in the prevalence of HBV infection among countries, sensitivity of molecular techniques, and the size and virological features of the study groups. In one study, we determined the rate of occult HBV infection in Iranian HD patients with isolated hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) (6). Of 289 patients enrolled in this study, 18 subjects had isolated anti-HBc and HBV-DNA was detected in 50% of patients who had isolated anti-HBc. Plasma HBV-DNA load was less than 50 IU/ml in each patient. Our investigation showed that occult HBV infection was common in HD patients with isolated anti-HBc regardless of age, sex, aminotransferases levels, or length of time on dialysis (6). Our data is in agreement with the results of hollinger et al. References

Occult Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients in Panje-Azar Hospital, Gorgan
Abstract Background and objectives: Hepatitis B virus infection is a major health problem in worldwide. The prevalence of Occult and chronic HBV in hemodialysis patients is higher than standard in developing countries. People with occult HBV are negative for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) but positive for HBV-DNA. We aimed to evaluate occult hepatitis B infection in patients under hemodialysis in ...
متن کاملCHARACTERISTICS AND PREVALENCE OF OCCULT HEPATITIS B VIRUS INFECTION IN PATIENTS WITH HEPATITIS C IN IRAN
ABSTRACT Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in patients who lack detectable hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is called occult hepatitis B infection. Such infections have been frequently identified in patients with chronic hepatitis Cliver disease, but their prevalence is not known. Methods: 207 patients with chronic hepatitis C who were HCV -RNA and antiHCV positive were stu...
متن کاملOccult Hepatitis B Infection and Its Role in Blood Safety: a Review
Background: Blood transfusion plays a great role in public health and the blood safety still has remained a main concern. HBV has been considered as one of the most prevalent blood borne infections. It is estimated that chronic HBV affects 350-400 million people worldwide. Comprehensive knowledge about HBV has high importance in Iran due to high number of blood dependent patients. Material ...

Background : Hbs-Ag positivity rates in dialysis patients correlate with endemicity in the general population. There is a subset of patients with occult HBV infection that defined as the presence of detectable HBV-DNA by PCR in patients who are negative for Hbs-Ag. We decided to detect the occult HBV cases in our hemodialysis patients. Methods : With support of charity society of renal pati...
متن کاملOccult Hepatitis B Demonstrated by Anti-HBc and HBV DNA in HIV-Positive Patients
Background: In patients who are hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA-positive, but HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) -negative, the infection is referred to as occult hepatitis B infection (OBI). Occult HBV infection is harmful when other liver diseases are present, and can aggravate liver damage in in patients with chronic liver diseases. In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection the suppression of vir...
